Hotelier Judith Boulbain is gradually extending her empire: as well as the one-star San Samuele and Salieri, and the ever-popular Locanda Art Deco, she now offers self-catering apartments at her Residenza Art Deco. The Art Deco properties are chic and simple, with the occasional 1930s and ‘40s touches in the Locanda, and pleasant surprises such as computers and DVD players in many of the rooms in both locations.

We finally abandoned my bag at a spacious, split level apartment close by. Annexed to the ‘Locanda Art Déco’, this residenza was fragranced with Tuscan pot pourri from 12th century ‘Farmaceutica’, ‘Santa Maria Novella’. Cool and comfortable, the couth accommodation had gleaming Terrazzo, a nifty kitchenette, and rugged beams tamed by stencils.

Ms. Hai rattled off her suspicions, which are provocative but unproven: that in one test, she was forced to use an oar that was as “light as a cigarette” and that in another, her route was littered by an unusually high number of moored motorboats. After the Locanda Art Deco hotel hired her privately, she was regularly pulled over by the police to make sure her passengers were from that hotel, she said.

Down a busy side-street stuffed with antique shops, equidistant from Accademia and the theatrical Piazza San Marco (10 minutes), Locanda Art Deco is owned by Frenchwoman Judith Boulbain, whose impeccable taste has turned this tall, thin slice of a building into a showcase for her passion for Deco pieces and furniture from around the world. Such is her perfectionism, Judith aims for quality over quantity, with just six rooms ready at the moment (though more are soon to be opened).
